Similar to Covid-19 or previously known as N-Cov (N for Novel), Feline Coronavirus (F-Cov) also is a deadly virus to your pet. I suspected that my fluffy and not-so-little Fatty the Cat got this viral disease from the Cat Hotel we sent him for 13-days of boarding while we were away for Umrah. It was a big hit to us, and also a big mistake to learn.
This incident happened in November, right before Covid-19. Thus the information and awareness about Coronavirus hasn't yet come into picture that time. According to the veterinary, this F-Cov or FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) virus is contagious and easily spread by air. But it is harmless to any human.
We sent him over to a Cat Hotel in Puchong because this hotel allows those cats roaming around and mingle to each other. Our cat never has a chance to interact with any other cat as he's the only cat we own, and he's considered as a House Cat because we never let him out. So, we thought that this is the best step for him to make some friends.
No, I'm not blaming this Cat Hotel. Honestly, I like their services and friendliness. They keeps on updating us, sending photos and very time-flexible (we can send/pick-up by anytime). We also got 30% discount for 'Umrah package'. Even after what happened, they offers full responsibility in term of full refund and sincerely offering to take care our sick cat without charges.
The first symptom we had noticed was high fever - 40°c! Our cat looks so weak, inactive and losing appetite. Hence, we brought him to see a doctor at Dr Paws Vet Clinic. The doctor gave him medicine for the fever and to boost his appetite.
Then the scary thing starts to happen. His front leg is limping! How can a cat couldn't walk, running and jumping? He also faced the difficulty of scratching. We brought him for second opinion - Jhan Veterinary Clinic Putrajaya, for the blood test. Such a bad news for us, when our cat has been diagnosed with FIP disease. According to the doctor and based on their experience, cats with FIP only can survive between 2 weeks to 2 months. Some cases, the life expectancy only 1 week long as there's NO CURE found. Cat can die quickly once clinical sign develop. Hence, the doctor suggested some 'cruel' way --- to put him into 'sleep'. Hell NO! We won't do that. We won't easily give up on him.
The doctor respect with our decision and gave us the Immune Booster. But he's getting weaker, whole day sleeping.. and hiding. That was another scary thing to think of. Some believe, when the time comes, they rather hiding.. so that the owner won't see them dies.
Apparently, he's losing weight too. 1kg in just few days. Then, the virus spread and starts attacked his back feet.
We considering other option, but the vaccine is too expensive. USD 160 per vial.
After a week of treatment and complete medicine, we brought him to Petsville Animal Clinic Cyberjaya for another full blood test. They are sending the blood sample to UPM to know his organ functions and the type and level of F-Cov he has. As for record, we have spent RM 350 for the blood test.
When the result came out, Alhamdulillah, he's recovering! No sign of F-Cov anymore, the result turns NEGATIVE. He's gaining back his appetite and his energy. Starts active, running and playing. Weight as on today 5.7kg already.
Yeah, he's a fighter, warrior and FIP survivor. Fatty, I never give up on you. Stay strong and healthy, ok? In future, I'll only send you to the PRIVACY kind of Cat Hotel. No more mingle around and mix with other cats. This is for your own good.
